Up until at least two years of age, our pets are a work in progress. Pushing out their messy young coat and working on producing their more weather resistant, lower maintenance, adult coat. Identifying the adult coat isn't always possible until it's present, so cutting their hair too early can mean we cause irreversible damage before the easier to care for adult coat grows in.
We recommend waiting until two years of age if possible before deciding on any trimming, cutting, or shaving as many pets do not need, or benefit from a haircut.
Shaving can cause irreversible damage to hair/coat and lead to long term discomfort.
Discomfort from perpetual matting, overheating and lack of temperature regulation, skin issues, and hair loss -all closely associated with damaged coat and short haircuts.
Lack of hair affects the skins ability to regulate sebum(oil) production and PH balance, increasing the risk of skin infections, acne, hair loss, and environmental allergies.
Hair is the first line of defense for the skin (the body's LARGEST organ) against everything they interact with; the sun, heat/cold, physical injury to the skin, parasites, household cleaners/chemicals, bacteria, fungus and so much more.
Puppies and kittens are born with very soft and fuzzy hair. Typically around 6 months to 1 year of age, they begin to bring in their adult coat.
When this change is happening, it tends to be messy and creates an increase in matting.
The adult coat is typically fully grown in by 2 years of age. Adult coat is often much more manageable, and weather resistant.
Young coat however is often like a swiffer duster, collecting everything along the way and hard to maintain
We encourage waiting until 2 years of age, if possible before deciding the clip or shave the coat.

Coat change can be messy and difficult to manage and many pets benefit from more frequent grooming for the first 2 years
Many breeds do not benefit from having their hair cut and we can cause irreversible damage to the coat by clipping.
Waiting until 2 years of age allows the adult coat an opportunity to come through, and may be easier to manage than imagined!
